WSJ: Binance top managers detained in Nigeria will remain in custody until March 20

On March 13, 2024, a hearing was held in Nigeria in the case of Binance and two top managers of the exchange - Tigran Gambaryan and Nadim Anjarwalla. The court ruled that they will remain in custody until the next meeting, which will be held on March 20, the WSJ reports.

Recall that Binance employees have been held in the country since the end of February 2024. Gambaryan holds the position of head of the Financial Crimes Department of the company, and Andjarvall holds the position of Regional head for East and West Africa.

According to Wired, Gambarian and Anjarvall arrived in Abuja on February 25, 2024. They were invited by the local authorities to discuss the exchange's activities in the country.

After the meeting, the employees were taken to a hotel and then moved to a house that is under the supervision of the National Security Agency of Nigeria. Both defendants were not charged and the reason for the detention was not explained, the WSJ added.

The publication managed to contact the families of the detained top managers. They commented on the situation:

"It is difficult to keep up hope when, after 17 days, we are still no closer to knowing when Nadim and Tigran will be released. We ask the Nigerian authorities to release them immediately."

A Binance representative said that the company is doing everything possible to bring employees home. At the same time, the platform refuted statements by some media outlets that Binance faces a fine of $ 10 billion.
