The struggle for privacy in the United States. Senators again proposed banning CBDC

The authors of the proposal are Republican politicians Ted Cruz, Bill Hagerty, Rick Scott, Ted Budd and Mike Brown.

On February 26, a group of five U.S. senators introduced a bill "On combating CBDC Surveillance", which prohibits the Fed from directly transferring the digital dollar to citizens.

They fear that the central bank's digital currency will be programmed to spy on ordinary people through monitoring their transactions.

"The administration of [US President] Joe Biden is salivating at the thought of encroaching on our freedom and invading the privacy of citizens in order to monitor their personal spending habits, so Congress should clarify that the Fed does not have the authority to implement CBDC," Cruz said.

The initiative was also supported by local public and financial organizations: Heritage Action for America, the Blockchain Association, the Association of American Bankers, the Association of Independent Public Bankers and the Club for Growth Foundation.

Cruz had already tried to push legislation against the CBDC in March 2023. Then he proposed a document prohibiting the Fed from launching a consumer-oriented digital currency of the central bank.

A year earlier, the senator submitted a similar proposal, but it never progressed beyond the consideration stage.
