The introduction of the digital ruble will cost banks ₽50 billion

One of the banks involved in the pilot project of the digital ruble has already invested about 150 million rubles. The main costs came from improving information security, as well as "building a gateway" with the Central Bank of Russia.

Experts note that the costs can be several times higher depending on the size of the credit institution. It is assumed that each individual financial institution will have to pay 200-300 million rubles for the introduction of the ruble. All these funds are needed for cybersecurity, new hardware and software, specialists and business scenarios.

According to the study, the digital ruble can bring profits in the amount of 17 billion to 61 billion rubles. Everything depends on the cooperation of banks with the Central Bank.

Banks can earn another 12-51 billion on commission income from new products based on smart contracts. However, the profit from commissions paid by B2B customers will decrease as the digital ruble is introduced, analysts say.

At the same time, in the middle of the summer of 2023, experts called for lower amounts required for a new form of national currency. At that time, it was noted that medium-sized banks without branches would have to spend up to ₽100 million on technology on average.

However, such figures are practically nothing compared to how much financial organizations can lose due to the introduction of the virtual ruble. According to the calculations of the National Rating Agency (NRA), the losses of banks can range from 45 to 95 billion rubles.
