Experts of the international financial organization noted that a number of features of the region make the use of digital payments very effective.
Countries are often scattered archipelagos where it is expensive to create a physical infrastructure for payment providers. Most States are also heavily dependent on international transfers and tourism.
According to IMF experts, these specific conditions are pushing the authorities to explore the potential of digital payment systems.
"A careful step-by-step approach will help the countries of the region explore digital money. The authorities must clearly define the goals behind the impulse, fully understand the consequences and plan specific experiments to properly verify assumptions and use cases," the IMF warned.
