"Project Ensemble aims to create an innovative financial market infrastructure (FMI) in Hong Kong, which will facilitate unhindered interbank settlements based on tokenized deposits in wCBDC," the HKMA said in an announcement.

HKMA intends to test payment options with real-world tokenized assets. For example, carbon credits, green bonds, air transport and avionics, electronic bills of lading and treasury controls.

At the initial stage, operations with wCBDC will take place within the framework of the regulatory sandbox, which the HKMA, the Hong Kong Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) and the Financial Services and Treasury Department (FSTB) intend to launch by the end of the year.

Earlier, the government of this special administrative region of China announced plans for expanded testing of the digital yuan (e-CNY) and the transition to the second stage of a pilot project related to the digital Hong Kong dollar (e-HKD).
