Nigerian authorities have arrested two top Binance managers
Two high-ranking employees of the Binance cryptocurrency exchange arrived in Nigeria to discuss a ban on the activities of crypto platforms, but were detained by the authorities.
Earlier, the Nigerian government was concerned about the large amount of funds passing through cryptocurrency exchanges, including Binance. Last year, $26 billion was transferred through this platform in Nigeria. Therefore, as part of efforts to stabilize the national currency, the country's authorities have begun blocking the sites of large crypto exchanges. At the same time, even before that, Binance limited its work with the Nigerian naira in response to regulatory pressure.
"We are concerned that the practice of illegal flows of funds passing through a number of cryptocurrency exchanges continues. In the case of Binance, the flow reached $26 billion last year, while the money comes from sources and users whom we cannot accurately identify," said Olayemi Cardoso, governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria.
It seems that now the Nigerian authorities have moved on to the next stage ― Binance employees had their passports confiscated and they themselves were arrested. As part of the strengthening of control over cryptocurrency transactions, the Nigerian regulator also demanded that Binance provide a complete list of local customers of the platform from the very moment of launch.
