Finland's National Bureau of Investigation has tracked anonymous Monero transactions
The Finnish news channel MTV Uutiset reported that the Finnish National Bureau of Investigation (KRP) managed to track transactions using the confidential cryptocurrency Monero (XMR).
Journalists of the MTV Crime Reporters section of the MTV Uutiset channel reported, with reference to the statement of the regional prosecutor Pasi Vainio, that KRP experts managed to track transactions using XMR, as well as identify its final recipient. Before that, Monero was considered an "untraceable crypto currency."
During the investigation of a high-profile criminal case on the theft of personal data in one of the psychiatric clinics in Finland and the extortion of cryptocurrencies as a payment for silence, it was found that XMR was transferred to the personal accounts of Julius Kivimyaki, who lives in Estonia.
The head of the KRP investigation team, Marco Leposena, commented that the task of identifying the attacker was not easy, since money transfers in the Monero blockchain are not public, and the built-in functions are designed to make tracking as difficult as possible.
However, KRP experts have successfully coped with this task. Leposena refused to tell reporters the specific details of the investigation, explaining that this information is classified, since it is about the technical methods of the police.
Recall that in 2023, the manufacturer of Razer gaming equipment suffered from a leak of customer data. Subsequently, an offer appeared on the hacker forum to sell them for $100,000 in the XMR cryptocurrency.
