FinCEN has revealed statistics on the use of bitcoin in human trafficking

The United States Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) has presented a report according to which the use of cryptocurrencies in global crimes related to human trafficking and child sexual exploitation has increased in 2020-2021.

In its analysis, the agency referred to data from financial companies. During the specified period, they collectively recorded 2,311 cases of settlements for these illegal activities in digital assets, most often bitcoins, in the amount of more than $412 million.

Moreover, a sharp increase occurred in 2021 — 1975 messages compared to 336 in 2020.

"Victims of these crimes end up in labor slavery or are forced to participate in commercial sexual activities," the report says.

The latest data studied on the topic is dated December 2021.

Most of the cases reviewed in the report included the exchange of cryptocurrencies for CSAM. Transactions were carried out either through bitcoin ATMs or through mixers.
