In South Korea, fake brokers lured $4.1 million to "buy cryptocurrencies"
Busan police detained two people for defrauding an elderly citizen and stealing 5.5 billion won ($4.1 million) under the guise of cryptocurrency investments. This is reported by local media.
According to the case file, the victim was promised 70% profit with monthly investments worth 1 billion won.
From September to December 2022, the attackers received six transfers from the pensioner. In return, he was shown fake balance sheets and real estate contracts totaling 20 billion won.
In reality, all funds were not even transferred to cryptocurrency, the organizers of the scheme appropriated them for themselves.
The police are continuing to investigate, information about the refund has not yet been made public.
Recall that in February, Jinwuk Shin, the head of the South Korean bitcoin exchange Bitsonic, received seven years in prison for participating in a fraudulent scheme worth $7.5 million.
